Malaysia has aggressive protectionist taxes to support Proton and Perodua. Import duty 30%, excise duty 60-105% (by engine size), plus 10% SST. A fully imported Toyota Corolla effectively costs 2-3x Japan price. Locally assembled cars (Proton, Perodua, and CKD Toyota/Honda) are far cheaper. CBU tax calculation method changed in Jan 2025, raising prices further.

Perodua Myvi and Proton Saga dominate the affordable segment. Japanese brands (Toyota, Honda) are respected but expensive. Mudah.my and CarBase.my are main platforms. Drive on LEFT (right-hand drive).

Driving licence (expats)

Foreign DL valid 3 months for visitors. Residents must obtain Malaysian licence — written and practical test required at JPJ.

Key gotchas
  • Fully imported (CBU) cars cost 2-3x their origin price due to stacked import+excise duties — always buy locally assembled
  • Fuel subsidy (RON95 at €0.47/L) only for Malaysians with MyKad — foreigners pay market price ~€0.75/L
  • RIGHT-HAND DRIVE — continental European cars not registerable

Malaysia is cheap for annual running costs and has very affordable locally-made cars. The key trick: never buy a CBU import — the tax structure makes them absurdly overpriced. Fuel subsidy applies only to Malaysians.
