Market quality✅ Good

Autoscout24.it and Subito.it are the main platforms. Large supply, good quality. Italian cars (Fiat, Alfa Romeo, Lancia) and German brands well represented. Prices reasonable vs. Western EU average.

Driving licence (expats)

EU licences directly exchangeable. Non-EU (RU/BY): valid 12 months from obtaining Italian residence. Exchange to Italian licence required — no driving test but written exam in Italian or with translator. UA: bilateral agreement exists.

Key gotchas
  • Insurance in Southern Italy (Naples, Palermo, Rome) is shockingly expensive — can exceed €2,000/yr for basic third-party
  • ZTL (Limited Traffic Zones) in historic city centres: fines of €80-160 auto-generated by cameras — check before driving in
  • Bollo (road tax) penalties if unpaid: late fee + 30% surcharge — pay by December 31

Italy is medium cost overall but with extreme geographic variation in insurance: Northern Italy (Trentino, Veneto) is affordable, Southern Italy is very expensive. ZTL zones catch many new expats off-guard.
