Market quality🟡 Fair

Decent used car market — Japanese RHD imports (Toyota, Honda, Nissan) dominate. Lexpress Auto and Facebook groups main channels. Quality generally reasonable for the region.

Driving licence (expats)

Foreign DL valid 3 months for tourists. Permanent residents must obtain Mauritian licence — theory and practical test required.

Key gotchas
  • RIGHT-HAND DRIVE — continental European cars unusable
  • Traffic in Port Louis and Grand Baie is heavy during peak hours despite the island's small size
  • Cyclone season (Nov–Apr): keep car in garage if possible; hail and flood damage not uncommon

Mauritius is a mid-tier car market with import duties and right-hand-drive constraints. A car is essential on the island — public transport is limited. Japanese imports offer the best value.
