Greece's climate splits sharply by region: Athens hits 33C in July, Crete stays mild, Kastoria gets real snow — station data, not one national average.
Four Greek weather stations, one country, four different winters. Athens, Thessaloniki, Irakleio and Kastoria sit inside the same borders and disagree completely about what January means. This chapter walks the year through each of them, so the region you choose becomes a decision rather than an assumption inherited from a holiday photograph.
Not one Mediterranean climate
Athens averages a daily maximum of 33°C in July, measured at the Ellinikon station on the 1991-2020 normal. Kastoria, 657 m up in the mountains of the northwest, averages a January overnight minimum of -2.1°C on that same 1991-2020 normal, and gets real winter snow. Both stations sit inside the same country. The whitewashed village above a warm sea is a true picture of Greece; it is also only one picture out of at least three.
The EU’s own Climate-ADAPT profile for the country states the reason plainly: Greek topography is complex enough that conditions shift from Mediterranean to alpine inside a few dozen kilometres. Four stations of the (EMY) carry this chapter, chosen to mark the corners rather than to average them. Athens for the dry-summer south, Thessaloniki for the colder and wetter north, Irakleio for Crete and the islands, Kastoria for the mountain interior.
The corners matter more than the national mean, which describes nowhere. Someone weighing an Athens flat against a Cretan village or a stone house in Epirus is not really choosing a temperature. They are choosing which months of the year are the difficult ones. In Athens those are July and August; in Kastoria they run from December through February; on Crete there is barely a difficult stretch at all.
What follows walks each station through its own year, and states the baseline behind every figure at the point the figure appears. That is not pedantry. The temperature series and the rainfall series used here come from different periods, and merging them would quietly invent a climate that nobody measured.
Athens and the Attica basin: heat, then a mild wet winter
July at Ellinikon averages 33°C by day on the 1991-2020 normal, and August holds level with it. That is the mean daily maximum, so roughly half the afternoons in an ordinary July run hotter still. Attica compounds the arithmetic. The basin is ringed by hills, holds its air, and gives the day’s heat back slowly overnight, which is why the number that decides whether you sleep is the overnight low rather than the afternoon high.

Winter is the half of the year newcomers overestimate. The January overnight minimum at the same station and period averages 6°C, which is mild by any measure, and frost inside the city is uncommon. Rain gives the season its character instead. Athens collects 414.1 mm a year, summed from the monthly WMO figures for the station on a 1955-1997 baseline, and the bulk of it arrives between October and January while the summer months stay close to dry.
Sunshine is the figure everyone asks for and the one this chapter is least certain of. EMY’s live climatic-data statistics give Athens roughly 2800 hours of sunshine a year. That block carries no stated 30-year period, unlike the temperature normals above, so it is best read as a sound approximation of a very sunny place rather than as a certified normal.
The heat is also moving, and the summer of 2025 showed what that looks like from inside. Copernicus recorded a Greek heatwave in which an estimated 85 % of the population sat through temperatures close to or above 40°C, peaking at 44°C. Both figures describe an observed event in the European climate service’s annual review, not a projection for a future decade. Air conditioning belongs in a Greek household budget, not on a wish list.

Thessaloniki and the north: a real winter
Summer is not what separates Thessaloniki from Athens. The 1991-2020 normal at EMY station 36 gives a July mean daily maximum of 32.3°C, close to the Athens figure and hot by any reasonable definition. Winter is where the north goes its own way: the January overnight minimum averages 2°C against 6°C in Athens, on the same normal.
That gap is the useful part. A four-season year with a genuine winter is available in Greece, in a city of real size, without surrendering the summer. Thessaloniki’s cold months bring cold rather than severity, and nothing about the city stops working in January. Coats, heating bills and dark December afternoons are simply part of the arrangement in a way they are not down in Attica, and a household that has budgeted only for cooling will notice.
Rainfall runs 448.7 mm a year, summed from the WMO monthly series for the station on a 1959-1997 baseline. Two things about that number deserve care. It rests on an older period than the 1991-2020 temperature normals beside it, because EMY’s current normals leave precipitation blank and the WMO relay is the unambiguous series available. And it spreads far more evenly across the calendar than Attica’s does, with rain that keeps falling through the summer instead of switching off in June.
North and west of the city the ground climbs steeply, and the climate climbs with it. The opposite corner of the country comes first.
Crete and the islands: the mild end of Greece
Crete holds both the mildest winter and the coolest summer in this chapter. Irakleio’s July mean maximum is 29.4°C on the 1991-2020 normal, the lowest July high of the four stations, and its January overnight minimum averages 9.2°C, the highest of the four. Both readings come from the same 1991-2020 EMY normal that anchors the rest of this chapter, so the comparison across stations is like for like. The sea does both jobs at once. It caps the summer afternoon and it floors the winter night.

Annual rainfall at Irakleio totals 483.2 mm in the same WMO monthly series. Unlike Athens and Thessaloniki, this station carries no published baseline period at all, since WMO leaves the start and end years blank for it. The honest description is a station total of unstated vintage rather than a dated normal, and attaching a period that was never published would be a small fabrication.
The island summer also carries a variable the mainland does not. From mid-June to early September the meltemi, the dry northerly Etesian wind, runs down the Aegean, occasionally at gale force. It cools the afternoon and it complicates the logistics of living on a small island, because a strong meltemi can hold ferries in port for a day or more. This is the stretch of Greece the postcard actually describes, and saying so plainly is more useful than letting one island summer stand in for a whole country.
The mountain interior: Kastoria's snow nobody expects from Greece
Kastoria, EMY station 33 at 657 m in the northwestern mountains, averages a January overnight minimum of -2.1°C on the 1991-2020 normal. That is below freezing as a monthly average, not as an occasional cold snap. Snow is a normal feature of the season here rather than a news event, and the ski centres in the northern and central ranges exist because the conditions support them.
Calling the interior cold misses what is actually happening to it. Kastoria’s July mean maximum, at the same station, elevation and period, is 30.4°C, a thoroughly warm summer day. The interior is continental rather than Mediterranean: hot afternoons in July, freezing nights in January, and a far wider swing between the two than any coast in the country records.
It is the wettest of the four as well. Kastoria (station 33, 657 m) collects 555.5 mm a year in the WMO monthly series, more than Athens, Thessaloniki or Irakleio, and WMO publishes no baseline period for this station either. The same caveat that applies to Crete applies here.
Two budgets get reshaped by this, and both are usually imported from the coast. Heating matters in the interior in a way it never does in Irakleio, and a house bought for its summer view comes with a winter that arrives on schedule every year. Anyone drawn to Epirus, western Macedonia or the Pindus villages by the price per square metre should price the season alongside the stone. Which leaves the part of the Greek year that no thirty-year normal captures.
Wildfires, heatwaves, and when to arrive
In August 2023 the Evros fire near Alexandroupolis burned 96000 hectares, the largest single wildfire ever recorded in the European Union. That is the settled figure, from Copernicus’s finalised annual review. EFFIS’s in-season estimate, published about three weeks after ignition, put the same fire at over 94,000 hectares. The distance between the two is mapping catching up with the fire, not a disagreement about what burned.
One catastrophic year is not a climate, though. Across the whole of 2024 Greece lost 43593 hectares to fire nationally, a far quieter season than 2023 though still slightly above the long-run average. Fire risk in Greece is real, concentrated into July and August, and wildly uneven from one year to the next.
Heat is the steadier signal. Through the summer of 2025 an estimated 85 % of the Greek population experienced temperatures close to or above 40°C, with a peak of 44°C. Both figures come from the European climate service’s record of what happened, and they belong together: the peak without the population share reads as a freak reading somewhere remote, which is not what 2025 was.
Arrival timing follows the stations rather than the calendar. Spring and early autumn are the workable windows nearly everywhere, because the Athens heat has either not built or already broken, the north has not turned cold, and the islands are open without being full. Someone moving for a mild winter should be looking at Crete and the southern islands, where 9.2°C is the January norm, rather than at the mainland. Someone moving for a four-season year should look north and accept the January that comes attached.
